Overview

What this protects

Trip Insurance protects the money tied to the trip itself — cancellation, interruption, delay, lost baggage, and medical costs abroad. It applies to prepaid, scheduled trips, domestic or international, and most plans also bundle in some emergency medical and evacuation coverage on top of the trip-cost protection.

Why Sell This

An easy add once a trip is booked

This protects money a client has already spent: nonrefundable flights, cruises, tour packages, deposits. That makes it an easy add whenever a trip is already booked. Cancel For Any Reason upgrades, offered on many plans, give clients more flexibility than the standard covered reasons and make for a natural upsell. It’s also one of the trickier categories to get right on the compliance side — licensing here has moved away from a single “full P&C everywhere” rule, and now depends on both the state and the carrier.

Client Fit

Who this typically fits

Prepaid trip bookers

U.S. residents booking a prepaid, scheduled trip, domestic or international.

Nonrefundable deposits

Clients with nonrefundable deposits on the line — cruises, tour packages, group travel.

Cancel For Any Reason seekers

Clients who want flexibility beyond the standard list of covered reasons.

Older travelers

Several plans cover travelers up to 99 years old.

Coverage Highlights

What’s typically included

Trip cancellation & interruption

Cancellation up to 100% of trip cost; interruption often pays more — 125% to 150% on several plans.

Bundled emergency medical

Emergency medical and evacuation coverage on most plans, though usually more modest than a dedicated travel medical plan.

Delay & baggage benefits

Trip delay, baggage delay, baggage loss, and missed connection benefits on nearly all plans.

Cancel For Any Reason add-on

Typically reimburses 50–75% of nonrefundable costs — must be purchased within 14–21 days of the initial deposit.

Interruption For Any Reason

Offered as a companion benefit on some plans, with the same early-purchase and state restrictions.

Compliance & Requirements

What’s changed on licensing

Limited-lines license

Most states have adopted a version of the NAIC Travel Insurance Model Act, creating a lighter-weight license specific to travel insurance.

P&C or A&H accepted

Many carriers accept any major line of authority, so an agent already licensed in either may qualify.

Travel retailer registration

In many states, a business can register as a travel retailer and sell without every employee holding a producer license.

Rules keep shifting

Requirements vary by carrier and state, and continue to change — New Jersey, Minnesota, and Oregon all revised theirs in 2026.

Given how much this is moving, check the actual requirement — including which lines of authority count — for your resident state directly with Treppy. Don’t assume full P&C is needed everywhere, and don’t assume nothing is needed anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a full P&C license to sell trip insurance?

Not necessarily. Many states allow a limited lines travel insurance producer license instead, and plenty of carriers accept any major line of authority, P&C or A&H, not P&C alone. Some states even let registered travel retailers sell without individual licensing under a supervising entity. Check your state’s actual rule and what your carrier accepts — this is genuinely in flux.

Is Cancel For Any Reason available everywhere?

No. It’s commonly excluded for New York residents across several plans, along with other state-specific carve-outs. Check availability before promising it to a client.

Does trip insurance cover what travel medical insurance covers?

Not really. Trip plans usually include some emergency medical and evacuation coverage, but the limits tend to be lower than a dedicated travel medical plan, and it can apply secondary to a client’s own health insurance. For international trips with real medical exposure, it’s worth asking whether the client needs both.

How early does a client need to buy this?

Before departure, at minimum. CFAR and IFAR add-ons usually need to go on within 14 to 21 days of the initial trip deposit, so it pays to bring this up early rather than waiting until closer to the trip.
