Student Insurance
Coverage for international students, scholars, interns, and exchange visitors — with plans that can renew for the length of a multi-year program.
Team up with Treppy® →Who this covers
Covers students, scholars, interns, and trainees taking part in international educational or exchange programs — whether that’s someone coming to study in the U.S. on an F-1, J-1, M-1, or A-1 visa, or a U.S. student heading abroad. Coverage can often renew straight through a multi-year program, which makes this one of the longer-lived client relationships an agent can build here.
Years of repeat business, not one policy
Several plans renew continuously for 4–5 years, so one client can mean years of repeat business instead of a single policy. It’s also a category where guidance actually matters: J-1 visitors are legally required to carry compliant insurance, and an agent who knows the rules becomes the person clients need, not just one option among many. The eligible group is wider than “students” too — scholars, interns, trainees, and teachers on exchange programs all qualify.
Who this typically fits
F-1 / M-1 students
International students on an F-1 or M-1 visa at a U.S. school or university.
J-1 exchange visitors
Scholars, interns, trainees, teachers, and researchers on exchange programs — not just students.
OPT students
Students on OPT, F-1 post-completion work authorization.
J-2 dependents
Spouses or dependents of a J-1 participant. The primary applicant must hold the visa.
F-2 dependents
Spouses or children of an F-1 student — can ride on the student’s policy or get a standalone plan.
U.S. students abroad
U.S. students studying abroad, under the general international plans in this category.
What’s typically included
Multi-year renewal
Several plans renew continuously across a whole academic program — 4–5 years on some.
Outpatient & hospitalization
Outpatient treatment, hospitalization, and prescription medication.
Mental health coverage
Mental and nervous disorder coverage on several plans.
Maternity coverage
Maternity coverage on some plans.
Pre-existing conditions
Covered after a waiting period, usually 6–12 months.
Medical evacuation
Included on plans sold to this group, though it doesn’t always show up in the short plan summary.
Sports & activities
Sports and activity coverage on several plans.
Waive school health fee
Proof of coverage often lets a student waive or deduct their school’s own health fee — confirm with the school rather than assume.
Two ways to get covered
There are really two ways a client ends up covered here, and it’s worth being clear with them about which one they’re getting. Dedicated student plans are built specifically for the F-1/J-1/M-1 population and often designed to run the length of a multi-year degree. The other path is a general international travel medical plan — several plans in Treppy’s broader international lineup explicitly allow student visa holders to use them, as long as the student’s school doesn’t have its own specific insurance mandate to satisfy.
What to confirm before quoting
Medical benefits
At least $100,000 per accident or illness (J-1).
Medical evacuation
At least $50,000 (J-1).
Repatriation of remains
At least $25,000 (J-1).
Deductible cap
No more than $500 per accident or illness (J-1).
Coinsurance
Plan must cover at least 75% of costs (J-1).
These numbers don’t always show up in a plan’s short summary — evacuation and repatriation figures especially tend to live only in the full brochure. Check the actual document before advising a J-1 client. F-1 is different: there’s no single federal minimum — each school sets its own required coverage, so check the specific school’s requirement rather than assume a J-1-style floor applies.
Frequently asked questions
Does this cover a J-1 client’s spouse or dependents?
On some plans, yes. J-2 dependents can be added, but only alongside the primary J-1 applicant — they can’t apply on their own.
What about a spouse or child of an F-1 student?
F-2 dependents can usually go on the F-1 student’s own policy, or get a separate standalone plan instead. It’s worth pricing both for a client, since a standalone plan is sometimes the cheaper route.
Can a client renew coverage for their whole program?
Depends on the plan. Some renew continuously for 4–5 years, others cap out around 12 months. Check the specific plan before promising a client open-ended coverage.
Does this work for students on OPT?
Yes — OPT holders are explicitly eligible on several plans.
Do they need to be full-time to qualify?
Usually, though that requirement gets waived for F-1 (including OPT) or J-1 holders on some plans. Check per plan rather than assuming either way.
